Welcome Tony! St. Johnstone Sign Liverpool Defender

This morning the club have announced the capture of Left Back Tony Gallacher from Liverpool, with the 22-Year-old joining on a deal until the summer of 2024.

Gallagher began his career at Falkirk where he made 26 appearances, assisting 6 times and thoroughly impressing. This earned him a move to Liverpool for a fee thought to be north of £200,000.

He failed to break into the first-team squad at Anfield, instead, spending the majority of his time playing for their Under-23 side. He made a solitary appearance for Jurgen Klopp's side - when the German infamously fielded an 11 comprised of youngsters against Aston Villa in the League Cup due to Club World Cup commitments in 2019.

Gallacher had a loan move to Toronto in 2020, where he managed 10 appearances for the Canadian side - only tasting defeat on 3 occasions and playing some decent football.

Tony since returned to Merseyside and understandably was still not getting game time, which led to St. Johnstone swooping in. The 22-year-old has joined on a permanent deal until the summer of 2024, replacing Reece Devine who went back to Manchester United yesterday.

Here is what Tony Gallacher said upon signing for the club:

"I'm really excited about my move to St Johnstone and can't wait to get started.

"I had a great time at Liverpool and I'd like to thank everyone there for looking after me and helping me to improve as a footballer and teach me so many good habits.

"I feel very lucky to have been part of a massive Football Club with so many wonderful professionals and people. It was an incredible education.

"But I felt the time was right to look for first-team football and an exciting opportunity presented itself at St Johnstone.

"Having been out on loan at Toronto, I enjoyed my time there and it made me want more and more first-team football.

"It's now up to me to show everyone at St Johnstone that I'm good enough to play regular first-team football and that's what I plan to do.

"My preference is to play on the left-hand side as I feel I have good energy to get up and down and can deliver crosses into the box. I also enjoy the defensive side of the game.

"My immediate aim is to work hard and integrate with the group. Team spirit is so important and I know it's a really good squad at St Johnstone.

"There will be a feeling of positivity going into the second half of the season. We then need to take that into games and we will.

"It's vital to win games of football and I am confident we will do that to move away from the bottom end of the table."

This is an encouraging signing and exactly the move that I think we need to be making; weeding out loan players and bringing in quality replacements on permanent contracts, another player tied up until 2024 can only be a positive.

Gallacher looks hungry to impress and hopefully his desire for game time can be fulfilled. He is a talented player and has shown glimpses of his potential throughout his career, now he just needs to play regular football.
