Today St. Johnstone played a friendly match behind "closed doors" against Stenhousemuir F.C. The game was a 7 goal thriller with "Saintees" scoring 6 of them with goals coming from Stevie May, Murray Davidson and Callum Hendry. May picked up a hattrick with Hendry bagging a brace in his first match back in blue and white. [Stevie May lifts Betfred Cup - Image: @SNS]

St. Johnstone goalkeeper Zander Clark may be ruled out for the Semi-Final clash for the Scottish Cup against St. Mirren. It has been said by Callum Davidson that Clark was injured during Sundays celebrations after the unlikely victory over Rangers. It is reported that Clark got stood on during Sunday's after party and his toe was injured. Him being out for Saturdays fixture against St. Mirren is seeming more likely as he was left out of today's triumphant squad at Easter Road, with cult hero Elliot Parish getting the nod. Callum is quoted as saying “I think he got himself involved in the celebrations and someone stood on his big toe. Hopefully it’s not too bad. We will need to see how it settles down next week." The injury doesn't appear to be too bad so hopefully he will be back fit to play on Sunday. This is a crucial game for Saints and we would be a lot more confident with our starting keeper in net. St. Johnstone have just announced that number 14 Stevie May has a agreed a new two year deal to keep him in Perth until the summer of 2023. Stevie may is quoted saying "I'm absolutely thrilled to have signed a new two year contract. St Johnstone is where my heart is and it's where I've enjoyed my most successful times in football." "We have achieved some great things this season, such as winning the Betfred League Cup and finishing in the top six, after defeating Rangers last night we are in the semis of the Scottish Cup and have given ourselves a chance of creating some more history." "Everybody at the club is buzzing and the atmosphere is first class. The spirit in the squad is amazing and it was there for all to see in the way we got our victory against Rangers." [Stevie May and David Wotherspoon lift the Betfred Cup - Image: @SNS] Personally I am over the moon with this contract extension as May is a quality player who also brings an extra bit of depth to the side. As well as being a vital player in Callum Davidsons St. Johnstone side. The striker is Saints top goal scorer in all competitions this season.

Hometown hero Stevie May has reportedly agreed a new deal with St. Johnstone. Stevie May is quoted saying "Talks are progressing well and I don’t imagine there being any issues there, I am hopeful that I will be sticking around. I was born in Perth and I love it here" May is optimistic about beating Rangers on Saturday and possibly bringing home the double as he said "You can think about it. We have had a little joke now and then about doing the double, but obviously there is a lot to go between now and that – and the biggest challenge of all is Sunday. Someone else has knocked Rangers out in the last two cups we have won so we will have a go at being that team this time." The 28 year old is clearly happy at the club and hopeful for his future with Saints. He has been a key player this season being St. Johnstone's top goal scorer in all competitions. Personally I would love to see May staying at the club as he brings a lot to the team and adds balance to our front line. [May lifting the league cup - Image: @SNS] The deal to bring Peter Pawlett to Saints appears to be off. News broke today which implies that he will be signing a new 2 year deal with Dundee United to keep him at Tannadice Park until 2023. This means that any potential transfer to St. Johnstone will be off, to the delight of some Saints fans including myself. The 30 year old was linked with a move to McDiarmid Park earlier this month. Callum Davidson has revealed that some first team players look likely for a contract extension. This is positive news as 12 St. Johnstone players will be out of contract in the summer as well as Glenn Middleton and James Brown's loan spells ending (you can read about these players in our previous articles which will be linked down below). Davidson is quoted saying "It’s pretty good, two or three are pretty close to agreeing." "We are working on a few more and it’s still ongoing all the time. There are a lot of positive signs there and I’d like to think after this week we’ll have some good news." After todays result in the scottish cup round of 16, where Rangers defeated Celtic 2-0 in the old firm cup tie it is now confirmed that next weekend Saints will take on Rangers in the Scottish Cup quarter final away at Ibrox. The game will most likely be televised on Premier Sports or BBC Scotland (most likely Premier Sports) and will take place next weekend. Saints already play Rangers on Wednesday at McDiarmid Park which makes this a double header against the league champions. [Stevie May battles Tavernier - Image: @Willie Vass]

Although the February addition has only played 1 minute for St. Johnstone, in the 3-0 trouncing of Motherwell away at Fir Park, Callum Davidson is clearly a fan of the young midfielder. There are certainly no arguments about his pedigree. Here's what Callum Davidson had to say, “So it’s a bit similar to Guy Melamed when he came in, the opportunities to see what he can do are limited so it takes longer." “Charlie has incredible ability, his touch and movement are good. he’s a big lad, he’s a box to box midfielder and has a great attitude so all the attributes are there." "It has just been a case of getting him up to speed because he was short of fitness when he arrived here. He’s suffered a bit from us being unable to get him games because of Covid and in another year we would have been able to get a proper look at him far earlier. But there have been no reserve matches and because of the size of squad we have, we can’t arrange bounce games." “So it’s a bit similar to Guy Melamed when he came in, the opportunities to see what he can do are limited so it takes longer. It’s very similar and in terms of playing, he’s technically very good like Guy is.” “At a club like St Johnstone it’s important to carry on that way because it gives us a chance to pick up good quality, work on developing them and then get the benefits. We wouldn’t be able to afford an Ali McCann so we have to find them ourselves.” This shows that Callum Davidson holds a high opinion of Gilmour and we should expect to see him in a saints shirt in the near future. Overall, Gilmour has great potential for saints and could become a key player if he is able to hit his stride and get a run of games especially due to the advancing age of our midfield, bar Ali McCann. The Scottish Government have announced that football fans will be allowed back into stadiums in limited numbers from the 17th of May (a very special day for saints fans). However, while this is positive news in its self, this does mean that without a cup run McDiarmid Park will remain empty for the remainder of the campaign. This is because Saints last league game of the season is 2 days prior against Livingston on the 15th of May. This is the statement from the scottish government. https://www.gov.scot/binaries/content/documents/govscot/publications/advice-and-guidance/2020/10/coronavirus-covid-19-protection-levels/documents/covid-19-protection-levels-summary-information-on-what-you-can-and-cannot-do/covid-19-protection-levels-summary-information-on-what-you-can-and-cannot-do/govscot%3Adocument/COVID-19%2Bprotection%2Blevels%2B-%2Bsummary%2Binformation%2Bon%2Bwhat%2Byou%2Bcan%2Band%2Bcannot%2Bdo.pdf [McDiarmid Park view from main stand - Image: Wikipedia]

Due to the passing of Prince Philip, Saints cup match against Clyde could be rescheduled as the funeral takes place on Saturday the 17th of April at 3pm, as this clashes with St. Johnstone's cup tie with Clyde which was due to take place at the same time. This was revealed by the SFA in a statement this evening as linked below. https://www.scottishfa.co.uk/news/scottish-fa-statement-scottish-cup-fourth-round-fixtures/?rid=2107 [Scottish cup trophy - Image : @SFA ]

Scottish Premiership club Livingston are in danger of being banned from UEFA competition because a failure to comply with UEFA regulations. Martindale's squad are currently fifth which would mean with Livingston barred from UEFA tournaments St. Johnstone would have a chance to claim a place in Europe. Although this would be great for the saints it unfortunately isn't looking likely as Livingston have put a statement out saying "Livingston FC are working round the clock to satisfy the criteria".
